Summer Fun

Outfitted for reciting the catechism

Well, the life of a seminary student is never dull!  I have already completed an ethics class this summer and am currently working on memorizing Luther’s Small Catechism (in its entirety) for my Lutheran Confessions class in August.

Between these two classes I have kept myself busy with work at the Luther Seminary Bookstore and at the Luther Seminary One Stop; which is basically an information center for students and visitors.

I have registered for Fall classes and have passed my Bible Proficiency Exam.  I was excited to have passed with a 91% on the first try!  It is required to get at least an 85% and many students here take it multiple times before they pass (even 5-6 times!)  So, I am now officially a Middler (second-year student) and am right on track for internship in a year.  It amazes me at how quickly time is passing.  I am glad for that and also sad that, looking back, much of my seminary life will be a blur.

I attended a preaching conference in Alexandria, MN in mid-June and got to put some of what i learned into practice at my first real “preaching gig” a Thanksgiving Lutheran in Bellevue.  It is incredibly scary and at the same time incredibly fun to be called to preach the gospel.  Look for a copy of my sermon text in another blog labeled “Do not declare unclean…”  It was great to have my family there to hear me preach!!

As if I can’t get enough of my family, David and I also had the chance to take a week with them and a couple friends to WY to backpack in the Bighorn Mountains.  It wore us out but the memories already outweigh the pain in my calves after hiking 10 miles+ two days in a row.

Well, time for me to get back to my catechism!
God’s peace,
Paula
